The Girls Dream Fair, organized by Junior Achievement, is a commendable effort to equip students with the skills and interest needed for STEM careers. Recognizing the need for greater exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math among young women, Junior Achievement is working tirelessly to engage, empower, and inspire girls to pursue STEM careers.
Rathbun Insurance is more than just a sponsor; our Chief Operating Officer (COO) is actively involved in the cause. Not only does she serve on the Junior Achievement of Mid-Michigan Associate Leadership Board, but she also plays a crucial role in planning the Girls Dream Fair as a member of the planning committee.
This exciting event, scheduled for Friday, April 19th, 2024, at Trinity Church, is specifically designed for 7th and 8th grade girls. It aims to provide them
with an opportunity to interact with over 25 professional women working in STEM careers. The day will commence with a panel discussion featuring female professionals who will share their personal journeys, recounting their experiences as young teens, finding mentors, and overcoming challenges in high-tech environments. Following this, small-group sessions guided by JA’s It’s My Future curriculum will offer practical insights into identifying personal inspirations and preparing for college and career success.
Throughout the day, students will have the chance to engage in hands-on activities led by volunteers from local organizations and businesses. These activities will help them explore real STEM careers and foster a deeper understanding of the exciting possibilities within these fields.
Research indicates that many teenagers shy away from STEM careers simply because they lack exposure to individuals in those fields or don't fully understand the nature of those professions. Events like the JA Girls Dream Fair are instrumental in breaking down these barriers and encouraging young women to pursue STEM careers.
Junior Achievement's impact on career choices is substantial, with nearly 30% of JA Alumni crediting the organization with influencing their career decisions. Additionally, 20% of JA Alumni work in the same career field as their JA mentors, showcasing the lasting impact of mentorship and guidance.
