At Rathbun Insurance, we are thrilled to share our support for two vibrant Juneteenth celebrations taking place in Lansing. Juneteenth, officially celebrated on June 19th, marks the end of slavery in the United States and is a day of immense cultural and historical significance. This year, numerous events have been organized to commemorate this symbolic date, and we are honored to be a part of these festivities.
Rathbun Insurance is proud to sponsor the Capitol City Juneteenth Celebration, a cornerstone event in Lansing. The festivities began with the Capitol City Kickoff Ceremony, recognizing the 31st annual Juneteenth Celebration and the 20th Annual State observance of Juneteenth in Michigan. A highlight of this ceremony was the announcement of award winners for the 2024 Vivian Riddle Lansing Juneteenth Essay Competition & Scholarship Program, celebrating the bright minds of our community.
The celebration kicked off on Friday, June 14th, at 4 PM with DJ Magic (Mike Sims) setting the stage with energetic tunes. Yvonne Curtis led the crowd in hustle and line dancing, followed by DJ Genesis and musical guests who entertained with R&B and Hip Hop until dusk. The excitement continued on Saturday, June 15th, starting with the 5K Run Walk/Roll at 8:30 AM at Sexton High School Track, organized by Ramon Brunson and Run Tha City 517, concluding at St. Joe Park.
The highlight of Saturday morning was the Juneteenth African American Parade, stepping off at 11 AM from J.W. Sexton High School. Parades are a community favorite, and this one did not disappoint, featuring vibrant floats, marching bands, and joyous participants celebrating freedom and unity.
Rathbun Insurance also supported the 4th Annual 517 Juneteenth Weekend celebration in Lansing's REO Town neighborhood. This four-day event from Thursday, June 13th to Sunday, June 16th, featured a variety of activities culminating in a free Juneteenth Festival on Saturday, June 15th, along South Washington Ave. The festival brought together community members to enjoy live music, food, and cultural displays, creating a spirited and inclusive atmosphere.
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, commemorates the date in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War, enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation and effectively ending slavery in the last remaining Confederate state. This historic day represents freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice for African Americans. Celebrating Juneteenth is a way to honor the struggles and achievements of African Americans and to acknowledge the importance of continuing the fight for equality and justice.
As we continue to honor Juneteenth, Rathbun Insurance remains committed to supporting events that celebrate our community's rich history and culture. We are proud to stand with Lansing and mid-Michigan in commemorating this important milestone in our nation's history. In observance of Juneteenth, our office will be closed on Wednesday, June 19th. We encourage everyone to participate in the local events and take this time to reflect on the significance of this day.
Join us in celebrating Juneteenth and embracing the spirit of freedom, unity, and progress. Together, we make our community stronger and more vibrant.
