At Rathbun Insurance, we believe in the power of community and mentorship. Our mission, “Being There Matters Most,” drives us to create meaningful opportunities to connect and support the next generation. On November 22, 2024, we had the privilege of partnering with the Wilson Talent Center (WTC) to host an impactful networking event for their Business and Risk Management Program students.
This event was months in the making, and it was nothing short of a success. The students at this event were absolutely remarkable—prepared, enthusiastic, and truly inspiring. They showed up eager to engage, ask thoughtful questions, and learn from the incredible professionals who joined us. Their energy and determination were a testament to the bright future of our community.
Led by Rathbun’s own Kenwon Simpson, a 2023 graduate of Waverly High School and Wilson Talent Center alumnus, the event was designed to inspire students and bridge the gap between education and career opportunities. Kenwon, who earned his CAWC and CISR designations while still in high school, knows firsthand the value of programs like WTC and was eager to give back.
The event required careful coordination:
- Collaborating with WTC: Monique Colizzi, the program instructor, worked closely with our team to ensure the event aligned with her students' learning objectives.
- Recruiting Business Professionals: We invited 26 business professionals from various industries across the Lansing area to serve as mentors during the networking rounds.
- Preparing the Students: Kenwon hosted a presentation, “The Power of Networking,” sharing tips and strategies to help students make the most of their conversations.
- Creating Resources: A detailed handout was designed for students to track their key takeaways, learn networking tips, and practice professional communication.
The event kicked off with a warm welcome from Kenwon and two student leaders, who set the tone with their enthusiasm and gratitude. After introductions, Kenwon’s presentation equipped students with practical advice on how to engage with professionals, share their stories, and make a lasting impression.
Business professionals arrived shortly after, and the structured networking rounds began:
- In the first two rounds, students paired up with a business professional for focused conversations. This format allowed them to ask questions, share their career interests, and receive personalized advice.
- The final two rounds encouraged students to collaborate with peers while engaging with multiple professionals. This format fostered teamwork and showcased the importance of diverse perspectives.
To keep the event running smoothly, Laura Stoken, Rathbun’s COO, served as the timekeeper, using a bell system to signal the start and end of each round.
The energy in the room was palpable as students practiced their skills, asked thoughtful questions, and gained confidence with each interaction. Business professionals were equally impressed, noting the students’ enthusiasm and potential.
One student shared, “This was my first time networking, and I learned so much! I feel more confident now about introducing myself and talking about my goals.”
Business professionals also left inspired, with many expressing their admiration for the students’ ambition and the program’s focus on real-world skills.
